Mabank ISD is building a new campus for grades 3 and 4 off Highway 198 between Mabank and Gun Barrel City. The district says it's scheduled to open in August 2027.
Gun Barrel City sits in the middle of Cedar Creek Lake country. It incorporated on May 26, 1969, a few years after the lake was finished, and it still goes by the motto "We Shoot Straight With You." The 2020 Census counted 6,190 people.
