Three small towns are within about 20 minutes. Gun Barrel City has the big stores and the ER. Mabank got its name in 1900, when landowners G. W. Mason and Thomas Eubank put their names together. Malakoff, home of the school district, was named after a Russian fort from the Crimean War. Lignite mines ran there from 1912 until 1945. In 1929 a carved prehistoric stone head turned up in a Malakoff gravel pit. It's known as the Malakoff Man.

Friday nights in this district belong to the Malakoff Tigers. Tiger Stadium is at Malakoff High School, about 12 minutes from the house.

In June, the Mabank Rodeo fills the Mabank Pavilion. 2026 was the 71st year, and there's a rodeo parade too.

For the big leagues, the Dallas pro teams are a little over an hour up US-175.

Highway 198 is the main road north to Gun Barrel City and Mabank, and south to Malakoff. US-175 is the run to Dallas.

For work close to home, Athens is the nearest bigger job center. The Athens Economic Development Corporation says more than 900 people there work in biomedical research and manufacturing. The City of Athens names Biomerics FMI and Argon Medical among the companies that have grown there.
